About Yercaud
- About 7hrs drive from Chennai
- Nearest railway station is Salem with drive from Salem to Yercaud being about 32Km. Yercaud Express train travels Chennai to Coimbatore and stops in Salem.
- Name comes from Lake-Forest from the Tamil name “Yaeri-Kaddu” which later became Yercaud. Used to only be lake earlier with surrounding forest and hence the name.
- Hills range known as Shervaroyan Hills at elevation of 4750-feet, considered King of Eastern Ghats
- Bisons are only animals that are here - have to be careful while hiking
- Rainy season starts Aug up to Jan. Heavy rain mid-Nov to Dec with min Temp of 11⁰.
- Peak times are mid-Nov to Dec, Apr–May. Most flowers bloom in May. Temp is max at 35⁰.
- Ladies-seat, Gents-seat, Childrens-seat are sites offering very nice views. Close-by are Silk Farm & Rose Garden. The Lake is pretty and offers a short walk.
- Manjakuttai is a village about 10mins drive from main Town and offers very nice views
- While there are 2 varieties of Coffee, namely Arabica & Robusta, Arabica is primarily grown in Yercaud
- Silver Oak trees are quite popular here and are used for making furniture. Pepper is made to grow on these trees as a creeper.
- Sacred Heart Yercaud (SHY) is an Anglo-Indian Girls Higher Secondary School that is 125 years (1894-2019) old. Founded by the Cluny Sisters, Blessed Anne Marie Javouhey (1779-1851) was the Foundress of the Congregation of the Sisters of St.Joseph of Cluny.
- Montford started in 1917 is an Anglo-Indian Boys Higher Secondary School, named after Father Montford who was from a place in France called Montford.
- Bangalore is about 2hrs drive to Yercaud - there’s a new route up the mountain that’s been opened that connects to the Bangalore highway
